The U.S. Census Bureau (Census) Foreign Trade Regulations (FTR) mandated the filing of Electronic Export Information (EEI) through the Automated Export System (AES) or AESDiret for the export of merchandise valued at least $2, 500 by Schedule B number. Without an EEI number, an export business may not be able to legitimately trade in the United States. Every export business must have an Internal Transaction Number (ITN).
Why the ITN is Important
ITN is important in the export process because:
- It is proof of filing. The AES ITN number is proof that a business or its agent has filed the EEI as required by the FTR. But, simply filing is not enough. It is important to file correct information; otherwise, it can result in civil and criminal penalties up to $10, 000 per violation.
- It verifies filing accuracy. In a routed export transaction, the ITN lets you ensure the accuracy of information filled out for you. If you allow someone else to file through AES on your behalf, make sure to monitor every transaction and ensure the documentation is completed correctly by your freight forwarders.
- It is necessary. In some documents, the ITN number is necessary for your shipment process. Having a Canadian ITN number is important to import goods into Canada.
Who Can File Through the AES?
A U. S. domiciled company must handle AES filings. The AES declaration can be filed by a freight manager, customs broker, or U. S. Principal Party in Interest. Thus, only a resident of the United States can file for an ITN. You can consider Clearit itn number filing services to get the job done for you.
How the AES Works
AES was made as a channel through which the appropriate agency receives export shipment information. The agency is involved in monitoring and validating U. S. exports. An ITN will be assigned when the AES filing has been completed. The customs broker or importer gives the ITN on the Vehicle Export Cover Sheet to U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CB) to file 72-hour notice and bring the vehicle across the United States Border.
What are the Penalties for Non-Compliance?
CBP will issue up to $10, 000 USD as penalties for non-compliance per violation. Such penalties may be imposed because of failure file export information in AES, failure to file on time, or provision of false or misleading information.
